Formerly unidentified aircraft of the 381st BG - WHIRLAWAY SOLVED! 8/25/02 by the webmaster (all I had to do was read) Identified B-17G #44-8010 (VE-J) assigned to the 532nd Squadron August 8, 1944, and transfered to the 91st BG on January 15, 1945. Information dug out of the 535th squadron's war diary when they borrowed the aircraft to lead a mission. Our initial description was: Aircraft has a chin turret, cheek guns and is painted olive drab. A horseshoe is painted below "WHIRLAWAY". There are 12 mission bombs painted on the nose. I am still a little curious as to why this aircraft is painted olive drab at this point in production, but there's the picture and here on October 7, 1944, is the reference to nickname and serial number in the 535th war diary.
