DUTIES OF 1142ND MILITARY POLICE COMPANY (AVN)

THE duties of this MP Company on this station consist of those duties coincident to any police organization. One of the most important, especially in war time, is of preserving internal security. This is done by Military Policemen being mounted on all gates and entrances, and a check made of all persons, military or civilian entering or leaving. Any suspicious persons loitering on the base without authority are apprehended and questioned.

Any aircraft that may crash is guarded by a member of this organization. whether it be on the station itself or adjacent to the base. A military escort is provided for many notable or important persons that may visit the station.

Bicycles are registered and a record of all bicycles on the station is kept. Any lost or stolen bicycles are picked up and returned to the rightful owner.

Investigations are conducted when any crime is committed by a member of the United States Army. If a civilian is implicated, the Military Police work in conjunction with the civilian police. Regulation and control of all traffic is maintained by a constant motorcycle patrol. while investigations are made of all traffic accidents.
Absentees, whether voluntary or involuntary are returned to their proper organizations and a record is kept of all violations and offences. Prisoner guards are furnished to guard all types of prisoners.
A Town Patrol is on duty each night to patrol the nearby villages and towns that are frequented by soldiers of this station while off duty. Guards are also posted on the perimeter upon the return of each mission, with two men posted at each briefing and interrogation.
The duties of the MP Company and any other MP Company are to enforce the law of the United States Army and to preserve law and order and to help any soldier that may be in distress.

The following was not part of the 1142nd War Diary, but I found it interesting enough to be placed here - Scott Burris

From the 448th Sub Depot War Diary, April 1945:

"The 1142nd M.P. Co (Avn) disbanded per Section 1, G.O. #52, Eighth Air Force HQ, dated 12 April 1945. All of the EM and officers, with the exception of 1st Sgt John T.Briscoe, were transferred to 432nd HQs & Base Service Sq, Air Service Group*. 1st Sgt Briscoe was transferred to 682nd Air Material Sq, 432nd Air Service Group and made first sgt of that organization.

All the personnel will continue to do the same work as was done in the 1142nd M.P. Co. and will be the guard section of the 432nd Air Service Group.

Practically the whole of the personnel were very depressed because of the disbandment, the majority having been with the Company since its activation in January 1943. All the men knew each other very well and worked harmoniously together and it was one big happy family, so to speak, which had a great effect on morale."

* The 432nd Air Service Group was formed April 15, 1945, as the result of a massive reorganization effort and absorbed nearly all of the tenant commands assigned to the 381st BG at Ridgewell, Station 167.
