534th Bomb. Sq., 381st Bomb Group (H) - WAR DIARY
Submitted by Lt. Ross G. Hanks, 1st Lt., A.C.

September, 1943

2. Six of the squadron’s aircraft took off for the first mission of the month.  Target for today was to be the airfield of Conches, France. Group was recalled by wing and all a/c returned to base.  This was not counted as a combat mission as a/c did not get into combat area.  The following crews took part: a/c 832, Lt Ohl; a/c 078, Lt. Niederriter; a/c 958, Lt. Loftin; a/c 845, Lt. Lishon; a/c 118, Lt. Hagarty; and a/c 123, Lt. Robert Fricks and crews.

3. Again the 534th put six a/c in the air to bomb the Air Park and Aerodrome at Romilly Sur Seine, France.  Target is important in view of the fact that a large reserve of German a/c are there.  E/A were very few in number and were not eager for combat.  Results of bombing were unobserved due to heavy overcast.  Crews participating as follows:

The second mission of the day was planned and scrubbed before the take-off.  The target was to have been the S. A. Andre Citreon Aero Engine Works on the Seine River S. of Paris.

10. What was to have been the group’s second raid on enemy occupied Norway was scrubbed before take-off.  The primary target was to have been the U-Boat center at Bergen.

15. In the effort to wipe out enemy airfields in France, today’s mission sent our ships to the Airfield and Air Part at Romilly Sur Seine, France. (Important reserve aircraft base.) Six of our aircraft were airborne at 1615 and were on their way to the target.  Enemy aircraft activity was almost at a standstill only 7 to 8 e/a were observed; these made a few passes at the low group and then headed for ho me.  AA fire encountered was in general meager.  The target area was well bracketed and bombing results were considered good.  Following crews participated:

Six of our “Forts” were airborne at 0700 and on their way to the Port area at Emden, Germany.  This port has grown quite a bit recently because of the damage inflicted at other ports of Germany.  Among these are Wilhelmshaven, Bremen and Hamburg.  Results of bombing were unobserved.  James Klingenberger, T/Sgt and S/Sgt John C. Winkle were credited for the destruction of 1 each enemy aircraft.  S/Sgts Tichy, Vina, Bonsell and Crawbuck were given credit for damaging an e/a apiece.  With 2 engines out and much flak damage to his ship, Lt Hagerty put her down in Great Ashfield (AAF Base).  Two crew members were injured prior to landing.  Following crews participated: A/C 754 – Capt Charles Ohl and crew, A/C 012 – Capt Robert C. Fricks and crew, A/C 078 – Lt D.J. Rutan and crew, and Lt Hagarty with his crew rounded out the six Aircrews that took part.

28. Word was received that the German pocket battleship Lutzow was moving out of her hiding place.  Mission was planned to seek and bomb this craft.  However it was scrubbed due to poor weather.
