Welcome to the 381st Bomb Group Nose
Art Photo Album.
Most of these photos are from the wonderful
collections of David Osborne and George W. Porter, and others
have been sent in by individual contributors.
What is "Nose Art"? In most cases,
nose art is simply the nickname of the aircraft painted
on the aircraft's nose. Pin-up or "Vargas" style
art work was popular but took talent & time to apply.
These names were picked by pilots, their combat crews, the
ground crews, and others.
About 30 to 40% of all Bombers in Eighth
Air Force had no nickname. The ones that did often had their
names changed. These nicknames were never an official part
of AAF nomenclature so our records of them are somewhat
sketchy.
We have a
list of 381st aircraft nicknames that are currently unidentified,
either by squadron assignment or by serial number -
can you help?
-Thanks! |
